Merging STEAM and Language Classes
Rachelle has incorporated the Merge Cube not just in STEAM, but also in Spanish. Why both? She discovered that students quickly form cross-curricular connections when given engaging digital tools. For example, they often begin exploring 3D models in Object Viewer for science projects and then realize they can use Immersive Reader and the Merge Cube to learn new vocabulary in Spanish as well. Students’ curiosity leads them naturally to ask questions about how the technology can apply to other subjects.
“They are curious about other subjects, creating with Object Viewer, and really enjoy the Immersive Reader functionality as well so we can use it in Spanish class too.” – Dr. Rachelle Dené Poth
Bringing the Solar System to Life
One of Rachelle’s stand-out lessons involved exploring the solar system. Students wore the planets “on each other’s heads” using augmented reality, recorded videos with their devices, and narrated their own astronomy lessons. This highly interactive, hands-on approach proved far more engaging than a textbook diagram or slideshow.
“It really helped them recall the content. Also giving students options in what to explore sparked more interest.” – Dr. Rachelle Dené Poth
Making Abstract Concepts Concrete
Hands-on AR experiences help students grasp abstract ideas. Instead of being passive receivers of information, students become active explorers. By “holding” 3D objects in their hands, they’re able to visualize and interact with phenomena that would otherwise feel distant or theoretical.
“It makes it easier to process because they’re engaged more and interacting with it more closely.” – Dr. Rachelle Dené Poth
Fostering Collaboration
The Merge Cube naturally encourages teamwork. When students discover a new feature or learn how to manipulate a 3D model in a clever way, they love to share it with their peers. This collaborative spirit can extend across subjects, benefiting both STEAM and world language classes.
“They enjoy sharing with each other what they are learning about and how to use it.” – Dr. Rachelle Dené Poth
